Of sea and land
The exhibition "Forms and colors in the works of Giovanni Lazzarini" was inaugurated on Friday, January 26th. The exhibition, born in the close collaboration with the artist's family, is realized by the Municipality of Viareggio with the contribution of CIR food cooperative Italian for catering, the Banca del Monte di Lucca Foundation and Arci Lucca Versilia.
Painter and carter, Giovanni Lazzarini is known in the world of art and papier-mache with the pseudonym of Menghino. He dedicated himself to painting encouraged by Uberto Bonetti, of whom he had married his sister Bianca, and from the beginning he reveals a singular character. As part of the Carnival, in addition to his skills as a talented performer Menghino stands out for having adopted in the papier-mache subjects of Italian and international political satire, while in art he has developed his own personal vision of the Viareggio world characterized by characters related to the sea world and of the docks.
Over sixty works, including paintings and sculptures, to rediscover and illustrate the work of a great Master strongly linked to the city as he himself describes: «I tried to paint this particular Viareggio on thread of memory, between stories and lived life, between reality and imagination. The technical means of artisan origin, a way of expressing me almost "vernacular", my long observations of the ex voto in the church of Sant'Andrea, even before discovering Lorenzo Viani, made me fully agree with those who want to insert my work in the great strand of art and popular culture ".
The exhibition will be open until April 22nd.
«I thank the Administration and all the people who have been close to us and helped to set up the exhibition - said Giovanna Lazzarini, Menghino's daughter -: my father was very close to this villa, he loved these spaces that today see him as a protagonist. A non-random choice that I hope also like everyone who wants to visit the exhibition. "
«The beauty of the historical places, like the Villa Paolina - concludes the Councilor for Culture Sandra Mei - combined with the beauty of the works, double attraction for anyone who wants to visit the exhibitions, and take the opportunity to see one of the great masters of pictorial traction Viareggina »
